Troops arrest 12 suspects, destroy 19 refineries, recover 138,000 litres products

Troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army, have destroyed 19 artisanal refineries, with 12 suspected oil thieves arrested, as well as over 138,000 litres of stolen products confiscated across the Joint Operations Area (JOA).

Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, confirmed this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.

Danjuma disclosed that the series of operations were carried out jointly with other security agencies in the JOA from March 17 to 23, 2025.

According to the Army spokesman, the operations took place in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States in the Niger Delta region,
within the period under review.

Among several communities in Rivers State raided, Danjuma disclosed: “Relatedly, troops raided seven illegal bunkering camps around Joinkrama 4 and Biseni in Ahoada West and Yenagoa LGAs of Rivers and Bayelsa States respectively.

“During the raid, illegal refining sites were destroyed with over 25,000 litres of stolen crude and 850 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gasoline Oil recovered respectively.

“Other items recovered included two wheelbarrows and a wooden boat. This was in addition to over 1,550 litres of stolen crude in cellophane bags on the waterways. Similar seizures were also made at Obiafu in Ogba/ Egbema/ Ndoni LGA.

“In Delta State, around Masogar in Ethiope West LGA, an illegal bunkering open truck, with an inbuilt iron tank with registration number Edo Ekp 83 XB was intercepted along NNPC/Chevron/Seplat pipeline. The truck was loaded with over 20,000 litres of stolen crude, with another truck positioned behind it, waiting to be loaded with stolen products.

“Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, along the Iko – Okorete communities road in Eastern Obolo LGA, a Toyota Avalon with Registration Number Lagos LSR 796 FD loaded with over 1,620 litres of stolen products in 54 cellophane bags was intercepted. The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.”

He said all the suspects have been handed over to the appropriate agencies for prosecution, while items and products confiscated were handled in accordance with the existing operational mandate.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, has charged the troops to scale up the anti-crude oil theft operations in the JOA in order to effectively deny oil thieves and associated criminals freedom of action.

He also called on the people of the region to continue to provide credible information on the activities of criminal elements in their domain to security agencies.

Sallah: Police Say 2 Children Killed, 20 Injured in Gombe Stampede

The Police Force Gombe State Command has confirmed the death of two children following a stampede at the Gombe main Eid Ground.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Gombe.

According to Abdullahi, the incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. at the exit gate of the Eid Ground, immediately after the conclusion of Eid prayers.

“The stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue.

“The situation, worsened by intense heat, led to the unfortunate incident,” he said.

He said that 22 individuals were affected and were immediately taken to hospitals for medical attention.

“Regrettably, two of the victims, a four-year-old boy, and six months-old baby girl, were pronounced dead by doctors while receiving treatment,” Abdullahi added.

He extended the command’s condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“The police urge Eid Ground managers to ensure that all entrance and exit gates remain open to facilitate smooth movement, especially after prayers,” he advised.

In a related development, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has condoled with the families of the deceased and those affected by the tragedy.

In a statement issued by his media aide on Sunday, the governor directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede, with the aim of preventing future occurrences.

“The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top priority. The state government is committed to learning from this incident and implementing corrective measures,” Yahaya said.

He also directed that all medical expenses for the injured victims be fully covered by the state government to ensure their recovery and well-being.

LP willl use Anambra guber poll to test our expected victory in 2027 – Julius Abure

The National Chairman of Labour Party, Mr Julius Abure has said the party will use the governorship election in Anambra State, which comes up in November this year, to test their expected victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Abure stated this in Awka, Anambra State capital on Sunday, during a forum organized by an organ of the party, Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, DMI, for aspirants of the party to meet with their delegates, ahead of the primary election which comes up on Saturday.

Abure who was represented by the national women leader of the party, Mrs Dudu Manuga said: “We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. Labour party has grown beyond a briefcase party, we are in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for 2027.

“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We will all join hands to emerge in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not biker, let us all stand strong, be united and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.

“This forum is to bring the aspirants together and make them integrate with the people they want to govern. We will plant LP in every polling unit. What is happening today in Anambra is crucial for our victory in 2027.”

Aspirants of the party; Dr George Moghalu and Mr John Nwosu attended the forum and also spoke to members of the party on their manifesto.

Moghalu in his speech insisted that the major problem of Anambra was that the people have lost confidence in government.

“People no longer trust government, security has collapsed, thugs are used to enforce taxes. If the government is doing the right thing, people will pay tax without being chased about, tax can also be collected electronically.”
