Payment For The Aged Begins October – Fayemi

Date:

The Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors” Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has assured Ekiti people that the social security scheme will be resuscitated in October this year.

Dr Fayemi gave this assurance during the May edition of “Meet Your Governor” while responding to a question raised by one of the respondents at home.

It would be recalled that during his first term in office, he instituted a social security scheme which was duly passed to law by the House of Assembly in which aged people were paid a sum of five thousand naira monthly. This initiative was stopped by the immediate regime of Mr Ayodele Fayose.

The governor also noted that his decision to raise the monthly provision for pensioners gratuity from 10 million naira to 100 million naira was a normal duty to the senior citizen not a favour. He considered the 100 million naira as not enough considering the contributions of the senior citizens to the State and the nation as a whole.

Speaking about the sacked “2000 workers” the governor corrected the notion that workers were sacked by his regime because no “2000 workers” were employed in the first instance. He however said the said “workers” had been given a clean slate to be employed in the forthcoming recruitment exercise as Ekiti indigenes.

Governor Fayemi disclosed that he spoke with the former Deputy Governor, Professor Olusola Eleka after the Supreme Court judgment and they resolved to forge ahead in the overall interest of Ekiti people.

Fayemi also disclosed that former Governor Fayose was the first to call to congratulate him after the Supreme Court Judgment. “I have no reason to fight him because there is nothing personal between us, he didn’t commit any offence against me personally but against Ekiti people. So, it is Ekiti people who can decide on what to do to him on their own not me,” Fayemi said
