Outrage As Armed Security Operatives Lay Siege On AIT

Date:

The premises of African Independent Television, AIT, has reportedly been surrounded by operatives of Nigerian Security Agencies, following its reopening on Friday, June 7.

The disclosure was made by the Media House’s Group Managing Director, Tony Akiotu.

Akiotu disclosed that Security Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and the Department of State Security Service, DSS, surrounded the premises of DAAR Communications PLC at 12:30am on Saturday, June 8.

According to Akiotu, the Security Operatives came “heavily fortified and carrying out surveillance on the premises.”

While describing the surveillance as “unusual” and its motive “unclear”, Akiotu, however, insisted that the station will not be deterred by outside forces.

He said: “The station is still transmitting signals on its national and global beam.”

Akiotu added that the Police and DSS’ action was an “unwarranted threat” to the station.

Recall that Post-Nigeria previously reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ordered the reopening of AIT and Ray Power FM.

In the ruling, Justice Ekwo Inyang ordered the parties to maintain status quo as the situation was as at Friday, May 31 when the processes were filed.

Justice Ekwo asked the parties to appear before the court on Thursday, June 13 to show cause why the motion on notice challenging the action of the regulatory agency should not be granted.
