The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday alleged that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first term in office was characterised by a high rate of poverty and unemployment.

The governor, in his second-term inauguration speech on Monday, claimed that he met the expectations of the people in his first term.

But the PDP, in a statement by its spokesman in the state, Hakeem Amode, dismissed the claim, saying the governor performed poorly in his first term.

But the Lagos APC through its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, disagreed with PDP, saying the governor “earned his second term ticket on the back of compelling landmark achievements, passionate commitment to the yearnings of teeming Lagosians and the fulfillment of his social contract with the electorate.

The statement read thus:

“RE-LAGOS PDP DEPLORES SANWO-OLU’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN FIRST TERM.
Our attention has been drawn to the jaundiced remark of the former main opposition party in Lagos State – PDP – as regards the achievements of Governor Sanwo-olu in his first term in office.
We would ordinarily have ignored the warped and obviously biased opinion of the party, but it’s imperative to save them from the misery inflicted by their recent electoral defeats by putting things in perspective.

“There’s no better response to this than the referendum that the last gubernatorial election in Lagos State represented with the massive votes for Sanwoolu across the length and breadth of the state and across ethnic, religious and gender divides.

“It was an eloquent testimony to the glittering performance of the state government in all sectors as represented by the much acknowledged THEMES mantra.

“Without doubt, it’s reckless and irresponsible politicking to blindly refuse to acknowledge the state government’s achievements in checkmating Covid-19 pandemic which literally saved the Nigerian nation.

“Lagosians remain proud of our achievements in public transportation, health-care, education, the environment, job creation, tourism, security and safety, sports, youth and women development etc
The completion of the various projects inherited from his predecessors underscores his commitment to the prudent management of state resources.

“The THEMES PLUS is simply an agenda to complete what was started during the first term, take it to the next level and further improve the fortunes of all Lagosians through responsible and responsive governance.

“It should be more of a serious concern to the PDP that it has lost relevance by yielding its perpetual second position to a tottering party.

“The Sanwoolu administration will resist all childish attempts to distract it from its constitutional responsibilities and successfully cater for its teeming populace.”
