The Federal Government has announced that candidates seeking admission into colleges of education across Nigeria will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) beginning from 2027.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during the admission policy meeting for the 2026 UTME. He explained that candidates with a minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects would be eligible to apply directly to colleges of education without writing the UTME.

According to the minister, eligible candidates would, however, be required to register with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for proper documentation and processing.

He stated that the candidates’ credentials would undergo screening, verification, and certification before admission letters are issued through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) in line with existing admission regulations.

The development is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen teacher education and encourage more students to pursue careers in the education sector.
