UNGA79: ExxonMobil Unveils $10Bn Deep-water Investment Plan in Nigeria — DP World eyes port project

Vice President Kashim Shettima has welcomed ExxonMobil’s proposed $10 billion investment in Nigeria’s deep-water oil operations, describing it as a clear testament to the administration’s economic reforms and investment-friendly policies.
This is coming just as the international maritime giant, DP World, has announced plans to develop a multibillion-dollar port project in Nigeria.
The Vice President stated this on Wednesday during a high-level meeting with ExxonMobil executives on the sidelines of the ongoing 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in York, United States.
“This potential investment by ExxonMobil aligns perfectly with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s vision for a more investment-friendly Nigeria. We are committed to creating an enabling environment for such transformative projects,” he declared.
VP Shettima elaborated on the President Tinubu administration’s efforts in ensuring ease of doing business in Nigeria.
He said, “The Renewed Hope Agenda places a strong emphasis on ease of doing business. We have initiated comprehensive reforms to streamline bureaucratic processes, enhance transparency, and provide fiscal incentives that make Nigeria an attractive destination for global investors”.
The Vice President highlighted recent policy changes by the administration, saying, “Our administration has taken bold steps to unify the exchange rate, remove fuel subsidies, and implement tax reforms.
These decisions, while challenging in the short term, are designed to create a more stable and predictable business environment in the long run,” he added.
Addressing the specific concerns of the oil and gas sector, the Vice President continued: “We are actively working on revising the fiscal framework for deep-water operations. Our goal is to strike a balance between attracting investments and ensuring fair returns for the Nigerian people. The potential ExxonMobil investment is a clear indication that we are moving in the right direction.
“As we welcome ExxonMobil’s renewed commitment, we see this as just the beginning. Our doors are open to all investors across various sectors. The message is clear: Nigeria is open for business, and the President Tinubu administration is your partner in progress.”
Earlier, Chairman and Managing Director of ExxonMobil Affiliates in Nigeria, Shane Harris, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in Nigeria.
“Our commitment to Nigeria remains unwavering. As we celebrate 70 years of oil production and 8 billion barrels produced, we’re not retreating but refocusing our investments on deep-water opportunities,” Harris said.
The centerpiece of ExxonMobil’s new strategy is the Owo project, a substantial subsea tie-back that could represent a $10 billion investment.
“We’re working closely with the President’s office and the Special Adviser to the President to secure favourable fiscal arrangements that will make this significant investment possible,” Harris explained.
Despite the planned divestment of its onshore assets to Seplat Energy, ExxonMobil aims to inject $1 billion annually into maintenance operations and an additional $1.5 billion to boost production by 50,000 barrels per day over the next few years.
Meanwhile, the international maritime giant, DP World, has announced plans to develop a multibillion-dollar port project in Nigeria.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & CEO of DP World, revealed the company’s intentions during a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The proposal comes as a direct response to President Tinubu’s aggressive investment drive and efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the country.
Sulayem said, “Nigeria is a massive market with hugely underutilised potentials. The Nigerian market has the capacity to dominate this sector in Africa. It is a major African country with a huge asset and resource base.
“With our supply chain of over 2,500 points of sale to Nigeria, we will bring in the requisite capital, human and material resources needed to achieve this feat.”
The DP World chief expressed confidence in the Nigerian economy, citing the country’s vast import and export market as a key factor in their decision to invest.
Welcoming the initiative, Vice President Shettima said the “proposal is a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s avowed commitment to attracting foreign investments” to Nigeria.
He emphasised the administration’s ongoing efforts to create a more investor-friendly environment.
“Nigeria is open to investors from around the world. We are witnessing a total rejuvenation in terms of economic policies aimed at freeing up the economy and making way for a free, fair, and enduring market,” the VP stated.
Vice President Shettima assured the investors of the government’s full support and the administration’s dedication to facilitating foreign investment and economic growth.
Others present at the meetings included the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa; and the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim Bio, among many others.

inDrive, the urban mobility platform, has unveiled a list of essential delivery tips to help customers ensure the safe delivery of their items.
The list of essential delivery tips includes making a wise choice of courier, labelling of the item with the recipient’s name and address, indicating the fragility and weight of the item to a courier, choosing the right vehicle to transport the item(s), documentation of the item or package’s condition by taking a photo, wrapping the package with recycled materials, checking the courier’s rating and comments, camouflaging the contents of the package, delivering in person expensive items like high-end electronics, cash or jewellery.
The list of essential tips was released against the backdrop of recent findings by the company, which analysed 5,000 comments left by Nigerians about their experiences with deliveries in 2024 and their appreciation of the most unusual deliveries and comments.
According to the study, the top five delivery categories include Food (17%), Clothes (15%), Electronics (10%), Documents (4%), and Medicine (2%). Other notable categories are textiles and cosmetics, which show the broad spectrum of everyday needs for which Nigerians rely on delivery services.
Speaking on the findings, Timothy Oladimeji, spokesperson for inDrive and Senior Business Development, stressed that the platform has introduced many innovations to give users a memorable and safe delivery experience.
“At inDrive, people trust us to deliver everything from daily essentials to meaningful gifts and special purchases. That’s why we are committed to making our service as reliable and secure as possible. Over the past year, we’ve seen incredible growth in new clients in Nigeria, with person-to-person (P2P) deliveries – such as parcels sent between friends, family, or individuals – tripling and B2B deliveries growing sixfold.
In 2024, we introduced improvements to geo-tracking, enhanced courier selection based on ratings and feedback, and made ordering even more seamless. We always encourage users to choose couriers carefully, using our convenient rating system to ensure the best experience. While we strive to provide a safe and efficient service, we also recommend that users take extra care when sending high-value items, just as they would with any delivery service.”, Timothy said.
According to him, it is better always to select a courier with good ratings and positive feedback to ensure a safe and reliable delivery experience.
Food deliveries took the lead, with items ranging from simple everyday meals to elaborate and carefully curated delicacies. While the most common food package is simply labelled “Food” (64%), some senders specify unique dishes, reflecting Nigeria’s rich culinary traditions.
Among the most exotic and rare deliveries are 42 tubers of yams, 5 litres of soup, a bag filled with small chops, a box of pizza, a bowl of goat meat (asun), shawarma and ice cream. Clothes are also major items that dominate as many fashion-conscious Nigerians frequently send clothes through delivery services.
Some of the unique fashion items spotted among deliveries include autogele i.e elaborate headgear used in traditional Nigerian fashion, aso-oke and asoebi i.e fabrics worn at special occasions and weddings, vintage shirts, waist trainers, wedding dresses, veils, and petticoats. Other unique items that have been delivered include esoteric crafts, a fragile bonsai tree, air fryer, bass guitar, PlayStation 5 game disc and excavator keys.
Another significant trend is the delivery of gifts, with flowers, surprise presents, and hampers being among the most commonly sent. The Nigerian love for celebration and appreciation is evident in these thoughtful deliveries.

In commemoration of World Water Day 2025, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), a member of Coca-Cola HBC (CCHBC) and the bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company and Quality Foods Africa, operator of Dodo Pizza, Krispy Kreme, Scoop’d Ice Cream and Burger Nation, have reinforced their commitment to water stewardship and environmental sustainability across Nigeria.
World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a United Nations initiative to spotlight the importance of freshwater and advocate for sustainable water management. The 2025 theme, “Glacier Preservation,” underscores the critical role of glaciers in sustaining life and maintaining the global water cycle
According to Oluwasoromidayo George, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at NBC, the company marked the occasion with initiatives across several states, engaging communities, environmental advocates, and stakeholders to promote water conservation.
“Water is life—it sustains people, communities, and ecosystems. As the main ingredient in our products, we take our responsibility seriously by using it efficiently, treating it responsibly, and ensuring safe water returns to the communities we serve. Our World Water Day initiatives reflect this unwavering commitment,” George stated.
She explained that NBC’s activities spanned multiple locations, including Maiduguri, Kano, Lagos, Abuja, Asejire, Owerri, and Benin, focusing on water security, waterway and coastal protection, and community empowerment through sustainable actions.
A major highlight of this year’s activities was the clean-up exercise at Elegushi Beach, Lagos, organized in partnership with Quality Foods Africa (QFA), franchisors of loved brands like Dodo Pizza and Krispy Kreme, as well as homegrown brands such as Scoop’d and Burger Nation. Employees of NBC and QFA, along with volunteers and environmental advocates, participated in removing plastic waste and pollutants, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to cleaner coastlines.

On March 22, the company embarked on a sensitisation drive at Kuchigoro Community, Abuja, which included a WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) awareness campaign to enhance community water access and hygiene standards. The activities culminated with a water conservation awareness walk in Owerri on March 25, further amplifying messages on sustainable water management.
Through these initiatives, NBC continues to lead by example in water conservation and environmental sustainability, reaffirming its role as a responsible corporate leader dedicated to a water-secure future.
