Trump, His Impeachment And Nigerians In Diaspora, By Tai Emeka Obasi

Date:

Out of the blues, for many, the news came that Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States had been impeached.

Honestly, I wasn’t really following. So when I saw this headline I thought he had been removed from office. But I read further to find out that he was only impeached by the House of Representatives. That really wasn’t the impeachment as it sounded. The real impeachment is the Senate version.

But the HoR version isn’t pleasant all the same. It is the catalyst that forces the upper chamber into their own action, that ends with the most powerful man on earth either being booted out of office or acquitted of all articles of impeachment.

And from that moment the HoR impeached their president, all global eyes turned to America. And trust Nigerians, Trump became a name mentioned more than any other word within our cyber hemisphere. And significantly, there is evident clear line of divide.

Nigerians bar none residing in the United States want the billionaire president impeached. Amongst many ‘sins’, they consider him a racist, whose long term plan is to flush all immigrants out of God’s Own Country.

Now, let’s pause here… I wish all my brothers and sisters residing in America and, indeed any other country outside Nigeria, well. Nobody is blaming them for leaving our shores. In most areas our country stinks. But I am not envying them either. However tough it is, I am making an honest living here and enjoying it. But I will stand solidly with my brothers and sisters to fight anyone making their lives uncomfortable anywhere on earth. However, I have to be convinced whoever I am fighting is as guilty as charged. Now, let’s look at this impeachment and get back to this later.

I am carefully following proceedings. To start with, I never supported Trump during 2016 election. He talked and still talks too much. Whatever he forgot on any stage he made up with tons of tweets. And most times he was raw, vulgar and as dirty as can only be imagined. It was a huge surprise to me that American Republicans of all people could ever throw up such character as a presidential candidate.

Most never gave him a chance. But after the dirtiest campaign in American history, fraught with unprecedented name-callings, with Trump almost undressing Hilary Clinton in public, the blond-haired septuagenarian became the 45th president of the United States.

While the Democrats were still wondering what hit them that hard, Trump set down to work and started delivering on all his campaign promises.

All.

And he truly started winning many over. I saw a man of his words. He may have acid mouth and tweets recklessly but I observed him closely and saw a man simplifying governance. All the myth surrounding the American seat of power are being simplified. The POTUS is equally an ordinary man after all, unlike what Yale made us believe otherwise.

But try as he does to make America truly the greatest country on earth as he promised, the American Democrats have other ideas.

The Democrats, who control the media, packaged their president as the devil and started all forms of propaganda, setting up impeachment traps even before he was sworn in.

They live with Trump in America but somehow seemingly underrate him. He is still mired in loquaciousness and as raw as he enjoys. But he is as streetwise as hell. He is equally far more intelligent than they are willing to give him credit for. He might occasionally stretch his presidential powers but he is smart enough not to step out of his constitutional confinement.

But the Democrats know many other ways to kill a rat. If it smartly avoids the trap, then smoke it out with a club in hand. They had to manufacture articles of impeachment. They started with allegations that Russia assisted Trump to rig the 2016 election that brought him to power.

Six months into his reign after inauguration, Adam Schiff backed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced a council of inquiry that investigated Trump’s alleged collusion with the Russians to manipulate the 2016 election.

This FBI investigation involved 2800 subpoenas, 500 witness interviews, 500 search warrants, 230 orders of communication records…costing 32 million dollars of American taxpayers’ money. But, to the Democrats huge disappointment, the 199-page comprehensive report cleared Trump’s campaign team of any wrong, let alone collude with the Russians.

It was a hoax after all but it didn’t stop the Democrats from trying harder. And their tries landed us in this present situation.

Out of 435 members of the House of Representatives, the Dems control the majority with 232 members. All they needed to have their say was a simple 218 majority, even in matters as serious as impeachment. Armed with this advantage they unwittingly jumped into desperate waters.

They slapped Trump with Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress, all in relation to a ‘quid pro quo’ call to the Ukrainian president, Volodymr Zelensky.

It took four and half years from first day of impeachment proceedings to get President Bill Clinton on the Senate floor of impeachment. It took the Democrats-controlled Congress just 22 weeks to get Trump at same place. They wanted it this supersonic because they didn’t want him to be in the November general election ballot .

And worse, they started the most partisan impeachment process in history with all Democrats in the House wanting Trump gone while all the Republicans stood by their president.

The opposition enjoyed their moments in the House… the Senate is owned by the Republicans. With 53 of the 100 senators at their kitty, the GOP are already proving whose cards are aces.

To be continued …
