Tinubu’s Rivers move assault on democracy, echoes military rule – Wabara

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it undemocratic and unconstitutional.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Wabara decried the suspension of the elected governor, deputy governor, and State House of Assembly members, replacing them with a sole administrator, describing the move as a “gross violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and an assault on democracy and the rule of law.”
“This action is a direct attack on the essence of our Republic.
“It deserves the strongest condemnation and corrective action by all well-meaning Nigerians, the judiciary, civil society, and the international community,” Wabara stated.
Expressing disappointment, the former Senate President revealed that he had earlier advised Tinubu against imposing emergency rule in Rivers State, a warning that was ignored.
“I unequivocally denounce the President’s action, which disregards the rule of law and undermines the sovereignty of the people of Rivers State.
“This undemocratic move violates our constitution, which the President swore to uphold, and threatens the very foundation of democracy in Nigeria,” Wabara asserted.
Drawing parallels to Nigeria’s past under military rule, Wabara warned that Tinubu’s action mirrors an era the country has tried to move beyond.
He emphasized that the people of Rivers State exercised their democratic rights in electing their leaders, and those officials were not appointed by the President but chosen by the electorate to serve their mandate.
“The constitution does not empower the President to unilaterally remove or replace elected officials.
“Such actions amount to an unconstitutional usurpation of power and a fundamental breach of Nigeria’s federal structure.
“The President’s decision to impose an unelected sole administrator is nothing short of a democratic travesty,” he stressed.
Wabara also called on the National Assembly to step up in defence of democracy, urging lawmakers not to serve as a rubber stamp for executive excesses.
“They must engage Mr. President and find a way to adopt a Doctrine of Necessity to salvage the situation. They must defend our democracy and protect the rule of law,” he stated

Peter Obi is a failed politician, has no history of democratic activism – Bwala

Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala has hit back at former presidential candidate, Peter Obi over his remarks about democratic governance in Nigeria.
According to him, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) is a failed politician who does not have a history of democratic activism.
The presidential aide said this in an X post on Tuesday in reaction to Obi’s recent remark about the state of democracy under the Bola Tinubu presidency.
Speaking at the 60th birthday colloquium for former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, in Abuja on Monday, Obi said progress made since the nation’s return to democratic rule in 1999 has been eroded.
Responding, Bwala said, “It is funny how failed politicians are trying to redefine democracy.
“Peter Obi said democracy has collapsed. Does he even know the meaning of democracy?
“When people were fighting for democracy, Gregory was buying and selling. He doesn’t have a history of any democratic activism from his school days to date.
“His expertise lies in instigating hate speech and vitriol. Talk Is cheap.”

Peter Obi decries release of Rivers allocation to Sole Administrator

The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has faulted the release of Rivers State allocation to Sole Administrator, Ibok Ekwe Ibas.
Amid political tension in Rivers, the apex court froze federal allocation to the state until State House Assembly properly appropriates the funds for usage.
However, Ibas confirmed release of the funds during a meeting with Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt on Friday.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi said it was “unlawful” to release the funds which were frozen on the orders of the Supreme Court.
“What is happening in the country today as it relates to River State is an aberration, unknown to our Constitution and must be condemned by every discerning mind.
“What we are witnessing in Rivers State is a brazen disobedience and disregard for the rule of law and our democratic principles.
“The decision to release statutory allocations to an appointed Sole Administrator, despite a standing order of the Supreme Court, is not just unlawful — it is a direct challenge to the authority of the highest court of our country.
“The Supreme Court had explicitly barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) from releasing these funds until a properly constituted House of Assembly passes a valid Appropriation Act. Yet, we see a situation where this order is being ignored. This raises serious moral intentions, and questions of what is happening in Rivers State,” the former Anambra governor said.
Obi said those involved were setting a dangerous precedent by disregarding the judgment of the Supreme Court.
He maintained that the CBN and AGF, institutions meant to uphold the law, should not be complicit in this disregard for the nation’s judiciary.
“We cannot build a nation where those who swore oaths to uphold our constitution and obey the laws are doing the opposite.
“This is about more than just Rivers State; it is about protecting the very fabric of our democracy, and our existence as a nation.
“A country cannot function where the rule of law is trampled upon, where the separation of powers is disregarded, and where judicial decisions are treated as mere suggestions. If we continue this way, we are undermining the future of our democracy.
“We must choose to do the right thing — to respect the law and uphold the principles that bind us as a nation,” Obi said.

US judge bars Trump from deporting immigration activist

A US judge on Friday temporarily blocked the Donald Trump administration from deporting an immigration activist whose detention in Colorado this week outraged state Democrats and immigration rights advocates.
US District Judge Nina Wang ruled that the 53-year-old Jeanette Vizguerra, a Mexican national who made headlines during President Donald Trump’s first term by moving into a church to avoid deportation, cannot be moved out of Colorado without further court action.
The judge has, therefore, scheduled a hearing on March 28.
According to a post on X from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, Vizguerra was arrested in Denver on Monday.
She has filed petitions in both federal district court and a US appeals court challenging her detention order as invalid.
The Trump administration has implemented a wide-ranging immigration crackdown since he took office in January, following a campaign in which he vowed to institute mass deportations and sharply reduce illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border.
Vizguerra’s arrest prompted a protest outside the ICE facility where she is being held.
Meanwhile, several Colorado Democrats have criticized her detention, noting that she has several children who are US citizens and has never been accused of a violent crime.
“This is Soviet-style political persecution of political dissidents under the guise of immigration enforcement.
“This is a mom of American citizens who works at Target and has started a community non-profit,” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said following the arrest.
