President Bola Tinubu has congratulated two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, following their historic elections and inaugurations as mayors in London boroughs.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President noted that Bright was sworn in as the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest-ever mayor in the borough’s history at just 29 years old. Bright’s journey to this role reflects seven years of dedicated community service, including her tenure as the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at age 22 in 2018.
Jackson has also made history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s establishment in 1900. His rapid ascent through local government began with his election as a councillor in 2022, followed by his appointment as Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.
President Tinubu praised both leaders for upholding the values of honesty, integrity, hard work, and commitment to community welfare. He emphasized that their stories serve as powerful inspiration for young Nigerians both at home and abroad to pursue excellence and civic engagement.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles as the first citizens of Barking and Dagenham and Islington. I have every confidence in your abilities and look forward to the positive impact you will make in your respective boroughs,” he said.
The appointments of Bright and Jackson underscored the growing influence and contributions of Nigerians in the global diaspora, reinforcing a legacy of leadership and service.
