The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Sowore made the demand on Tuesday while marking the sixth anniversary of the incident, questioning why those responsible had not been prosecuted.

“Where are the killers? Who ordered the shootings at #LekkiTollGate? Who has been prosecuted?” he asked in a post on X.

The activist also called for investigations into the alleged roles of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, military and police commanders, and other individuals he said should be questioned over the incident.

He further raised concerns about allegations that surveillance cameras at the toll gate were removed before the shootings, urging that the circumstances surrounding the incident be fully investigated.

Sowore pledged that if elected president in 2027, his administration would reopen the investigation, establish the chain of command and ensure that anyone found culpable faced prosecution, regardless of rank or political connections.

“Under a #Sowore2027 administration, we will reopen the investigations into the Lekki Toll Gate killings, uncover the full chain of command, identify those who ordered, authorised, and carried out unlawful killings, and ensure that everyone found culpable faces justice,” he said.

The Lekki Toll Gate incident occurred on October 20, 2020, during demonstrations against police brutality. The shootings sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

A Lagos State judicial panel of inquiry subsequently found that soldiers had fired at unarmed protesters and described the incident as a “massacre in context”. The state government later disputed aspects of the panel’s findings.
