Save Vultures to Prevent Extinctions and Looming Epidemic
The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has embarked on a rescue mission tagged “Supporting Community-based Monitoring and Conservation for Vulture Populations in Identified Vulture Safe Zones Across Nigeria” in its efforts to tackle the declining population of vulture and its associated benefits to the people. The Indianapolis Zoo is supporting this project which is part of a series of activities to conserve remnant vultures in the country.
As the world commemorates the International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) on 2nd September, NCF is using the opportunity to create more awareness about importance of vulture in our society and harp on some critical efforts NCF has put in place to help improve the situation.
The Vulture Safe Zone (VSZ) project is one of the Foundation’s efforts designed to protect remnant vulture populations in their natural environment, support sustainable livelihoods, preserving the ecosystem benefits of the species and promote peaceful and positive coexistence between the people and the vultures. The goal of the project is to reverse the negative trends in the viable populations of vultures found in two selected sites in Nigeria.
Some of the VSZ activities include Stakeholders engagement to identify threats and design livelihood alternatives to associated threats, and training of the local community on vulture population monitoring. These activities held on Thursday and Friday, 20th and 21st July 2023 at Iruowelle Village Community Hall Awka-Etiti Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.
The training focused on raising the capacity of community-based volunteers within the zones to methodically observe and report the trends in vulture populations in their community. This is important as it promotes species appreciation and consciousness within the community. The volunteers were also supported with monitoring equipment which includes 6 Binoculars, 2 GPS units, 2 Mobile Phones, data Sheets and other writing materials.
Nigeria is home to seven (7) out of the eleven (11) vultures that exist in Africa. They are Egyptian Vulture- Neophron percnopterus (Endangered), Hooded Vulture – Necrosyrtes monachus (Endangered), White-backed Gyps africanus (Endangered), White-headed Vulture – Trigonoceps occipitalis (Vulnerable), Ruppell’s Griffon – Gyp rueppellii (Endangered), Palm-nut Vulture – Gypohierax angolensis (Least Concern) and Lappet-faced Vulture -Torgos tracheliotus – (Endangered).
The only species that seems to be thriving in the country are the Hooded Vulture and Palm-nut Vulture. Vulture, otherwise called nature’s sanitary prefect, is the only species of bird/wildlife that feed on carcasses without emitting disease into the atmosphere, unlike other scavengers. Absence of vulture will lead to outbreak of diseases such as anthrax, rabies etc.
NCF is the foremost environmental NGO in Nigeria dedicated to nature conservation and biodiversity resources management. A key pillar in the 2021-2025 Strategic Action Pillar (SAP) is “Saving Species in Peril”, this is a driving force to rescue species, especially endemic to Nigeria such as vultures and many other flora and fauna.

Zelensky condemns Russian attack on Ukrainian energy grid
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Wednesday condemned what he described as an inhumane attack from Russia, which launched over 170 missiles and drones on his war-torn country’s power grid on Christmas Day, killing an energy worker.
It was gathered that this was the 13th large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy system this year, the latest in Russia’s campaign targeting the power grid during winter.
Meanwhile, Russia said five people had died in Ukrainian strikes and a falling drone in the border region of Kursk and North Ossetia in the Caucasus.
Ukraine said its air force downed 58 out of 79 Russian-launched missiles. It did not, however, down the two Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles launched by Russia.
British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has also condemned the strikes.
“I pay tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and the leadership of President Zelensky, in the face of further drone and missile attacks from Putin’s bloody and brutal war machine with no respite even at Christmas,” Starmer said.
Kyiv, the capital and most populous city of Ukraine said a Russian missile went through Moldovan and Romanian airspace but Romania said it detected no such violation while Moldova said it launched investigations.
“Unfortunately, there are some hits. As of now, there are blackouts in several regions,” Zelensky said.
