The African Democratic Congress, ADC, said no one is accusing the Federal Government of Nigeria of persecuting Christians in the country.

In an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, believes that any form of criticism is an attack on it.

Abdullahi made this statement against the backdrop of the declaration of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over allegations of Christian genocide by President Donald Trump of the United States.

Trump also said he had asked the Defence Department to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians”.

The ADC mouthpiece said, “Nobody is accusing this government of persecuting Christians or religious bigotry. They are missing the point.

“Unlike the APC, we are not seeing what’s going on—especially the declaration as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’—as opportunism.

“We feel embarrassed as Nigerians that outsiders are framing our security challenge along these lines that can further divide us.”
