New Look National Theatre: Bankers’ Committee Restores National Pride
In what could be best described as the restoration of national pride, the Bankers Committee are on the verge of completing the renovation and upgrading of facilities at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
The Committee disclosed this to the media on Tuesday in Lagos during a media parley and tour of the new-look National Theatre complex.
The renovation exercise commenced in July 2021 following approval by the Federal Government and the subsequent handover of the national edifice to the Bankers’ Committee.
By restoring the glory of an iconic asset, the Bankers’ Committee aims to unlock opportunities for the youth in the creative sector, leading to job creation, income generation, and foreign exchange generation, thereby developing a creative and entertainment centre with much-needed community spaces for Nigerians.
The facilities were upgraded to match the best standards of theatre and performance in the world. The entire Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system was replaced, fire safety standards, upgraded power, water supply, and sewage systems were all replaced. Upgrade of interior design with the installations of Audio Video Lighting (AVL), world stage engineering system, 11 lifts, solar power, new furniture for spaces and restoration of Artworks including those on the internal wall panels and the building façade.
The renovation works cover different spaces, including the 4,000-seater main bowl, over 3,000seater banquet hall, 2-nos. exhibition halls, 3-nos. cinemas, VIP spaces, actors’ changing rooms, industrial kitchen, over 300 new toilet cubicles, clinic, fire station, lobbies within the four National Theatre entrances and extensive roof repairs.
Speaking on the Bankers’ Committee’s restoration of the National Theatre, Mr. Segun Agbaje, Group Chief Executive Officer, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc. (GTCo) said, “I don’t think there are many countries in Africa that have the talent that we have in entertainment and the arts. All you can do when you have talented people, is to give them a platform to showcase their best. We will try to give a platform, where Nigerians who are in my opinion the best, have a chance to show the world that they are the best….”
The National Arts Theatre was constructed by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. The completion coincided with the hosting of the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) in January 1977.

Mark Angel, a Nigerian comedian, has responded to speculations that he is no longer managing teen comedians Emmanuella and Aunty Success.
During a TikTok live session, the comedian revealed that he has stepped down from managing the young stars and that their careers are now managed by a professional agency.
“There was a time when I managed Emmanuella and Success when they were kids, but I no longer manage them.
“I am too busy to manage them. So, they have an agency that manages them, but I still work with them,” he said.
The comedian went on to say that even if he no longer manages the teenagers, his connection with the girls would not go down and that it is still solid.
He insisted that he would continue to work with them with the same passion that had garnered them recognition.

BBNaija’s Tacha removes Davido’s tattoo on her chest after fall out
Big Brother Naija reality show star, Tacha has removed Davido’s tattoo from her chest.
The development came after Tacha’s fell out with Davido.
Gatekeeper reports that the duo fell out after the reality star tackled Davido for liking a shady tweet about her colleague, Phyna in October 2023.
In response, the singer went on to like a tweet that subtly shaded Tacha.
Amid the public altercation, Tacha vowed to remove the tattoo of Davido’s face drawn on her chest.
However, in a now trending video on her Instagram page, Tacha who recently relocated to the UK, shared the procedure of how the tattoo was removed.
Recall that she got a tattoo of the singer before she entered Big Brother house back in 2019.

Wizkid equals Burna Boy’s record as Nigerian artist with most charting albums on Billboard
Grammy Award winner Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, has equalled his colleague Burna Boy’s record as the Nigerian artist with the most charting albums in Billboard, 200 history.
The Starboy accomplished the feat after his latest album ‘Morayo’ debuted at number 98, selling 13,000 units in its first week.
As a result, Wizkid and Burna Boy are the Nigerian artists with the most Billboard 200 charting albums (4 each).
“Wizkid ties Burna Boy as the Nigerian artist with the most charting albums in Billboard 200 history (4 each),” music monitoring platform Chart Data wrote via X on Friday.
‘Morayo’ also debuted at number 4 on the Billboard World Albums chart.
With the recent announcement of his fifth studio album ‘5IVE’ scheduled to be released next year, Davido could also join the tie as he has already debuted three albums on the chart.
