The Lagos State Government has warned residents to prepare for possible flooding and above normal rainfall expected during the 2026 rainy season.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning on Thursday during the Seasonal Climate Prediction briefing held in Ikeja.

Wahab said, “weather forecasts indicate that Lagos may experience heavier rainfall this year, with the rainy season expected to begin in late March and last until early December”.

According to him, the predicted average annual rainfall could reach about 1,936 millimetres, which is higher than the long-term average recorded in previous years.

He noted that areas such as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe are likely to experience significant rainfall during the period.

The commissioner warned that the expected heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods, particularly in low-lying communities, while strong winds may occur at the beginning and end of the rainy season.

He urged residents to remain alert, avoid blocking drainage channels and comply with environmental regulations to reduce the risk of flooding.

Mr Wahab added that the state government has intensified flood control measures and is working with relevant agencies to mitigate the impact of the anticipated rainfall.
