Details of how a deputy inspector general of police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, Joseph Egbunike, died are emerging.
Egbunike who is a native of Onitsha, Anambra State, slumped and died in his FCID Area 10 office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday.
Until his death, Egbunike headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations.
Information has it that the late DIG has been battling some issues with diabetes.
According to one of the sources, Egbunike had on Tuesday evening complained about chest pain.
He was said to have clutched his chest for an extended period of time. He then requested to be taken to the hospital.
According to the sources, on getting to the hospital, Egbunike put on his face mask and alighted from the vehicle himself.
After he was allocated a bed, a source further revealed that he was put on oxygen.
After a while, he was said to have started struggling for breadth, with the Orderly holding and trying to calm him down, with the source adding: “In the process, he was even the one that removed the oxygen attached to his nose.
“That was how he died.
“He actually didn’t collapse in the office contrary to the report in the media.”
Egbunike, the sources further said he died of heart attack.
Egbunike who had previously served as the DIG in charge of Finance and Administration before he was appointed DIG Investigation hails from Onitsha in Anambra state and in the DIG overseeing the South-East geo-political zone.
A senior Police officer who was evidently in pain over the shocking demise confirmed the death of Egbunike.
