Atiku reacts to hacking of NBS website
Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar on Thursday said bad tidings have characterized President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Atiku was reacting to the hacking of the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, website.
The development is coming on the heels of the recent data published on the website of the @NBS_Nigeria on Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, CESPS.
In a statement by his Media Office, Atiku expressed hope that the hack was not an attempt to pigeonhole the integrity of data majorly used for planning and development and research purposes.
According to Atiku: “The unprecedented claim that the website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has been hacked is an unpleasant development that adds up to the bad tidings that have characterized the President Bola Tinubu administration.
“The development, which is coming on the heels of the recent data published on the website of the @NBS_Nigeria on Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS), underscores the credibility crisis of the current administration.
“These are strange times in Nigeria, and it is hoped that the situation at hand is not an underhand attempt to pigeonhole the integrity of data majorly used for planning and development and research purposes.
“Subjecting data and statistics such as those harvested, analysed, and released by the NBS to sexing up or political considerations is counterproductive.
“That is why the claim that the website of the National Bureau of Statistics was hacked into, the very first time in its history, should be of concern to the fidelity of the stats it releases to the public.
“Moreover, the coincidence of this so-called hack coming only shortly after the release of damning stats on security is suspicious.
“We may be tempted to assume that every stats released by the Bureau is an outcome of a hack.”

Shutdown: Republican Party taking order from Elon Musk – Hillary Clinton
United States former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has sounded off about Elon Musk’s influence over the spending drama on Capitol Hill.
Clinton’s comments come as House Democrats claim that ‘Extreme MAGA’ Republicans were driving the country to a government shutdown.
“If you’re just catching up: the Republican Party, taking orders from the world’s richest man, is on course to shut down the government over the holidays.
“Stopping paychecks for our troops and nutrition benefits for low-income families just in time for Christmas,” Clinton wrote in a post on X.
Fox News reports that the U.S government will go into partial shutdown at midnight Saturday if there’s no passable deal to kick the government funding deadline to March and continue spending at 2024 levels.
According to the report, Musk had come out in strong opposition to the original spending deal House Speaker, Mike Johnson, negotiated with Democrats.
However, the world richest man threatened to back a primary challenge to any Republican who voted for it.
Meanwhile, House Republicans on Thursday came out with a new version, which was substantially shorter and included both disaster aid and a suspension of the debt ceiling for two years, as President-elect Donald Trump had requested.
But the measure failed in the House, with some Republicans refusing to back it and Democrats uniting against it, with many apparently unhappy with Musk’s apparent influence.

War in Ukraine has made Russia stronger – Putin
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has said that the war in Ukraine has made his country “much stronger.”
Putin also rubbished claims that the fall of Russian key ally, Bashar al-Assad of Syria had hurt Moscow’s standing.
The Russian leader said this in a marathon end of the year press conference and television call-in seeking to project confidence at home and abroad.
He described President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine as “illegitimate”, adding that he (Putin) was ready to meet with US President-elect, Donald Trump and discuss peace proposals to end his full-scale invasion.
He, however, insisted that any meeting of such won’t stop Russia from keeping control of Crimea, together with the four Ukrainian regions he laid claim to in 2022.
The Russian leader appeared largely upbeat and confident, as his troops continued to make grinding progress in Ukraine.
“The situation on the battlefield is changing drastically, with movement occurring along the entire frontline.
“Every day our fighters are reclaiming territory by the square kilometre,” he said.
He said the Russian military was “advancing toward achieving our goals” in what he calls the special military operation in Ukraine.

Okpebholo panel alleges massive fraud in execution of projects by Obaseki govt
The Edo State Assets Verification Committee set up by Governor Monday Okpebholo said it has uncovered massive fraud in the execution of projects by the immediate past government of Godwin Obaseki.
Gatekeeper reports that the committee disclosed this at a press briefing to avail members of the public of its interim findings on some of the assets so far verified.
Chairman of the committee, Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, who addressed the press, listed some of the projects where fraud was allegedly discovered as Radisson Hotel, Edo State Oil Palm Project and Edo State Information Communication Technology Agency, ICTA, among others.
Umakhihe said the transactions on the Radisson Hotel project leave so much to be desired.
According to him, the Radisson Hotel project was initiated by the State Government by sourcing over N17.5 billion from the Stock Market, and the sum of N2 billion was paid for the acquisition of land.
He noted that just before the exit of the immediate past administration, the ownership changed, leaving Edo State, the core investor, with just 20 percent ownership.
Umakhihe said the state government must assume its prime position as the core investor and owner of the Radisson Hotel.
He added that the committee would avail members of the public more details in its final report.
The committee, according to him, also
observed that some agencies were created by the immediate past administration to execute some specific interest-based projects.
Umakhihe stated that the agencies reported directly to the governor, noting that information about the development is not readily available.
The committee chairman, who listed the Edo State Oil Palm Project Office as one of such agencies, alleged that the opaque approach necessitated the use of consultants with huge financial commitments expended by the past government.
Speaking on the Edo State Information Communication Technology Agency, ICTA, he alleged that the Greenfields Consultancy and Allied Services Limited and Greenzone Technologies took over the role of the ICTA in engaging contractors and vendors for EDSG Technology projects.
He claimed that they were in charge of identifying projects to be executed and selecting the vendors to execute them, noting that several bogus claims were replete in the sector.
“Imagine EDSG committing to paying over N5 billion for cyber security software license for the EdoGov platform for just three years starting from 2023 to 2025.
“Out of this sum, N1.7 billion has already been paid by the immediate past government.
“These are just some of the snippets of what we have unravelled. The job of the committee is still huge,” he said.
Umakhihe said when the committee resume sitting on January 6, 2025, it would look at other critical sectors of the state.
He listed the critical sectors to include the housing sector, education (SUBEB and EDOBEST), Ministry of Environment, College of Health Sciences and Technology, College of Nursing Sciences, and Ministry of Health.
He also listed all agricultural projects including grants from donor agencies, Edo Oil Palm Project, EDSOGPADEC, MOWAA, Edo Electrification Agency, sale of shares in BUA Cement, and the modular refinery project, among others.
Umakhihe expressed optimism that with a commitment to details, the committee would come out with a comprehensive report on the state’s assets and liabilities that would guide the Okpebholo government in making informed decisions.
