President Muhammadu Buhari has advised those planning to rig the 2023 general elections to perish the thought.

He gave the advice at a dinner with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Nigeria to break Thursday’s Ramadan fasting.

Buhari vowed to use every legitimate means to protect the votes of Nigerians.

“Those planning to rig the 2023 elections should think twice because I intend to resolutely protect and defend the sacred will of the Nigerian people to be expressed through the ballot box,” he said.

The president also cautioned against foreign interference at the elections.

“As you are all aware, the tenure of this administration ends on May 29, 2023. Typical of election years all over the world, the tempo of political activities is high.

“That is the nature of democracy. I am committed to bequeathing a stronger culture of credible elections to Nigeria than what I met.

“As Nigeria goes through this trajectory, I urge our friends in the global community, represented by you members of the diplomatic corps to adopt a positive role.

“A role that reinforces the doctrine of respect for our internal affairs and respect for facts, devoid of pre-conceived notions and bias.”

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Buhari called for greater consideration for humanitarian conditions in the affected areas, warning that “’the conflict will get worse, if an immediate resolution is not found.

“The war has lasted too long; costs so much and hurt too many people well beyond the immediate theatres.

“The rest of the world is progressively facing the impact of the conflict and this will certainly get worse if an immediate resolution is not found, not least in the area of food security.”

Buhari welcomed the recent initiative of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Gutteres, who visited Moscow and Kyiv and commended his efforts in search of a ceasefire as a prelude to other enduring solutions.

“The UN must continue to actively lead the way for engagements that would ultimately unlock peace through diplomacy,” he said.

He urged the world, especially the Muslim community to use the solemn and rewarding month of Ramadan to intensify prayers for the de-escalation of the conflict and for the return of peace to the world.

He also used the occasion to apprise members of the international community of some critical issues currently on the front burner of his administration’s agenda and spirited efforts at handling them.

The President said: “We continue to make steady progress in the daunting tasks of combating insecurity; fighting corruption; diversifying the economy; promoting good governance; and containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In spite of the many challenges we face, and continue to face, we have instituted measures to plug leakages, improve the economy and enhance the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“These include renewal of vital infrastructure, including rail and roads; implementation of the N2.3-trillion Economic Sustainability Plan to create jobs and provide support to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.

“They also include the launch of the National Development Plan (2021-2025) to spur economic growth and leverage science, technology and innovation.

“Other measures include the establishment of the Office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President on SDGs with the responsibility for ensuring coherence between development policies, plans and strategies.

“Some more are the launch, in collaboration with the UNDP, of the Nigeria SDGs Implementation Plan (2020-2030), to prioritise and mainstream the SDGs into their medium and long-term development policies and plans.”

The SDGs are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

The UN set them up in 2015 and they are intended to be achieved by 2030.

On COVID-19, the President, who restated Nigeria’s demand for vaccine equity, said the country would continue to expand its capacities for managing the pandemic.

Buhari, who also spoke on regional security, told the diplomats that the impact of the Libyan crisis on the countries in the Sahel, Lake Chad Basin, West and Central Africa were enormous and catastrophic.

He expressed concern about the proliferation of small and light weapons in the regions, made worse by the uncontrolled expulsion of foreign fighters from Libya without adequate consultations with the countries of the region.

He said: “The world needs to work together to combat these common challenges.

“I call on all your respective countries to reflect on this and collaborate with countries in the regions to combat this consequential spread of violence.”

On the fight against Boko Haram, the President said: “As you know well, Nigeria has made significant progress in combating the Boko Haram group in the North East.

“We are, however, recently confronted with new tactics deployed by the enemy to threaten our democratic values, as well as the common peace and freedom we enjoy in this country.”

Buhari commended Nigeria’s defence and security servicemen and women for their recent successes in routing the terrorists.

He said he was confident that insecurity in Nigeria would soon be brought under control.

He also acknowledged the support of Nigeria’s friends and partners in the global community, particularly the EU and the United States.

“This is for their understanding, support and agreement to allow us to procure vital equipment and resources to successfully propagate this war,” he said.

According to him, there is the need to intensify the cooperation and collaboration in spite of other major challenges confronting the international community.

Responding on behalf of the diplomats, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Ambassador Ibrahima Salaheddine, pledged that the international community would continue to support Nigeria before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

Salaheddinem is the High Commissioner of Cameroon to Nigeria,

“As Nigeria enters another electoral year, we pray Almighty God to put the electoral process under divine guidance for peaceful, free and fair elections,” he said.

He noted that COVID-19 truncated the tradition of meeting the president for the breaking of the fast for two years.

Salaheddinem congratulated the Nigerian government for curtailing the spread of the pandemic.

“The enlightened leadership of President Buhari largely brought its spread in Nigeria under control,” he said.

Eminent Nigerians, at the weekend, celebrated former Military Administrator (MILAD) of Bayelsa State, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (COO) during his 70th birthday held in Yenagoa, capital of the South-South state.

At the three-day event, thousands of Bayelsans trooped out to felicitate the Ipoti-Ekiti-born retired officer for laying the foundation for Bayelsa’s development between 1997 and 1998.
Bayelsa was carved out of Rivers State by the late General Sani Abacha and Olubolade was appointed the Military Administrator (MILAD) in June 1997.
It is generally believed that from June 27, 1997 to July 9, 1998 when he governed the South-South state, he laid a solid foundation for the development of the Ijaw-populated state that successive governors built on.
So, the three-day event in Yenagoa was an opportunity for thousands of residents of the axis to show their appreciation.
From the Exco Chamber of the Government House to the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Samson Siasia Sports Complex and thanksgiving church service, Olubolade and his wife, Mrs. Mopelola Olubolade, decked in various Ijaw attires, were the cynosure of all eyes.
The Chief of Staff, Govt House, Yenagoa, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, Ph.D, ensured that all the events were memorable.
In fact, it was a pay-back time as former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Douye Diri, his wife, Dr. Gloria Diri; the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo; former Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd); Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff; Ibenanawei of Bomo Kingdom, King Joshua Igbugburu, and others led the series of tributes to celebrate Olubolade.
Also present at the event were the Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency, Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode; Navy Captain Segun Noibi (rtd), Prof. Steve Azaiki, Olubolade’s first child and daughter, Oluwayemisi; her husband, Gabriel Akinadewo; Apostle Zilly Aggrey, Olubolade’s classmates at military school and Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), politicians, opinion leaders, members of Bayelsa State Cultural Troupe, entertainers and others.
In fact, throughout the event, Bayelsa literally stood still for the man described by Ewhrudjakpo as the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Bayelsa “for laying a solid foundation for our development”.
All those present at the various events to mark the birthday of the septuagenarian, who was born on November 30, 1954,
expressed their gratitude to him.
During the President Jonathan administration, Olubolade was also a Minister in three ministries – Special Duties, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Police Affairs.
He was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in 1974, and attended courses including the Britannia Royal Naval College, UK in 1975, the Naval College of Engineering, India in 1979 and others.
During the birthday celebrations, all the projects he started and inaugurated during his tenure were highlighted in a special documentary and programme/brochure.
All venues used for the celebrations were also specially branded with various photographs of the septuagenarian.
Everywhere was colourful.
In a special tribute entitled
‘H.E. Olubolade At 70’, Diri said: “I am compelled to break the protocol of my annual leave to send warm greetings to a selfless leader, the former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (Rtd.) on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
“I extend my warmest felicitations to this highly disciplined and revered former Military Administrator on this milestone of attaining a platinum jubilee.
“His commitment and leadership in laying the foundation of development in our dear State is inspiring, and we use this occasion of his birth to celebrate him, his life and times, and his selfless service to Bayelsa State.
“Once again, happy birthday to our leader and a worthy citizen of this great land of Bayelsa.
“We pray God continue to keep you in sound health.
“Nua sir! SDD”.
On his part, Ewhrudjakpo said: “Last night, I joined the family, friends and well-wishers of the former military administrator of our dear State Bayelsa at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Yenagoa.
“The gathering of state actors and top government officials to celebrate His Excellency, Navy Captain, Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade, was for his dedication to humanity and our dear State Bayelsa.
“The Chief Operating Officer COO, as I fondly call him, is a man of possibilities, integrity and character. His track record is distinguished and Bayelsa is what it is today because he extinguished the appetite for greed and corruption to nurture a new Bayelsa of his era even with the scarce resources.
“We are celebrating him because he is a sacrificial leader and one who we will refer to as an altruistic and audacious leader.
“Happy 70th Birthday Sir”.
Jonathan described Olubolade as a great man who Bayelsans are proud of.
Represented by his wife, Dame Patience, he lauded Olubolade for his development efforts in Bayelsa, which he said are still visible, saying he laid the foundation for the development of the 28-year-old state.
While wishing him many more celebrations in good health, Jonathan expressed appreciation to Diri for the peace and unity in the state being tonic to encourage development.
Dr. Gloria Diri noted that Bayelsans were happy with the role played by the celebrant in the development of the state, describing him as a son of the soil.
Responding, Olubolade said his love and appreciation for Bayelsa State made him to mark his 70th birthday in the state, describing Bayelsans as loving people.
He recalled working with Jonathan whom he described as result oriented, saying he learnt so much from him and other Bayelsans he worked with.
He expressed gratitude to Diri for celebrating him, saying he is a man of peace.
Olubolade also advised Nigerians to shun corruption, adding that he has adopted Bayelsa as his home.
He was given a standing ovation.
Responding to the applause, Olubolade said he was deeply grateful “for your presence at my 70th birthday celebration. Your love and friendship made this day unforgettable.
“I thank you for your thoughtful gifts, kind words and for taking the time to celebrate this special moment with my family”.
In his exhortation entitled ‘While there is life’, Apostle Zilly Aggrey said there is power in hope, thus the living should be hopeful.
He prayed for the celebrant and those present.
The event at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, built by Olubolade, featured football match, athletics relays, cultural displays and choir ministration, amongst other activities.
Various branded gifts, food and drink were given to everybody present.

Senate, NUC seek establishment of more tertiary institutions

Published

The Senate and the National Universities Commission, NUC, have sought the establishment of more universities in Nigeria.

The clamour for more universities in the country by the Senate and NUC came as stakeholders in the education sector applauded the proposed Federal University, Okigwe, in Imo State, during a public hearing organised on Monday by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund.

In separate remarks on the occasion, the chairman of the committee, Senator Muntari Dandutse; the sponsor of the bill seeking the establishment of the Federal University, Okigwe, Senator Patrick Ndubueze; and the Executive Secretary of NUC, Mr Chris Maiyaki, called for the establishment of more universities in the country to meet the demand for education at that level by millions of Nigerians.

Specifically, according to the NUC Executive Secretary, available statistics show a huge deficit in the required number of universities in Nigeria.

“There are 275 universities, both public and private, for over two million prospective students seeking admission on a yearly basis.

“The implication is that on a yearly basis, out of the two million prospective students seeking university admission, only 500,000 to 700,000 are absorbed, leaving about 1.3 million out of the equation with attendant frustrations.

“Nigeria definitely needs more universities, as the 275 existing ones are just too inadequate for her population of 200 million. Indonesia, which also has over 200 million population like Nigeria, has about 2,000 universities, not to talk of Russia, Brazil and India with hundreds of thousands of universities,” he said.

Maiyaki added that the required expansion of regulatory and capacity building for more universities is already being put in place by NUC.

Earlier in his remarks, Senator Dandutse said the proposed Federal University, Okigwe, would help to make university education more accessible to Nigerians in Imo State in particular and across the country generally.

In his own remarks, Senator Ndubueze said the proposed university would give Okigwe town the required transformation it deserved over the years, being the only province of the past that has not been accorded federal presence, let alone made the capital of a state like many others.

According to him, 2024 was filled with harrowing hardship for workers in the country.

“I welcome you to a year that we have witnessed one of the greatest turbulence in our history as a movement. It was a period in which we were invaded, ransacked, and subjected to the highest level of threats and intimidation,” he said.
