2023 AFCONQ: Peseiro’s job on the line as Super Eagles tackle Leone Stars in Monrovia

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro’s future with the team is on the line as the three-time African champions take to the field against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, Monrovia on Sunday (today).

Peseiro’s one-year contract will expire at the end of this month and his chance of getting a renewal will depend on the result against the Leone Stars.

There were calls for the Portuguese’s sack after the Super Eagles suffered a shocking 1-0 home loss to Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in March but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has kept faith with the former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela gaffer.

Presently, Nigeria is second in the pool with nine points from four matches, a point behind Guinea Bissau, who have played five matches and reached the top following their defeat of Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday.

A draw will guarantee the Super Eagles presence at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

The NFF is expected to offer Peseiro a new one-year contract should the Super Eagles qualify for the 2023 AFCON finals with a mandate to win the competition.

The Eagles defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in the reverse fixture last June with Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen getting the goals.

This will be the 18th meeting between both teams, with Nigeria having a better head-to-head record, winning ten, drawing five and losing two.
